Joint Youth Group in the News

The following Queens Tribune “Eastern CLOSEUP” from October 1-7, 2009 focuses on the joint youth group venture being undertaken by three of METNY’s synagogues – Hillcrest Jewish Center, Hollis Hills Jewish Center and Israel Center of Conservative Judaism.

“Three synagogues in Northeast Queens, Hillcrest Jewish Center, Hollis Hills Jewish Center and Israel Center of Conservative Judaism have joined together to create a joint youth program.  The three synagogues began meeting last winter about sharing resources and working with their strengths.  Hollis and Hillcrest had previously affiliated with each other to sponsor their Youth Group program.  Beginning this September, ICCJ will join them.  The program is open to all Jewish children, not just to those affiliated with the three sponsoring synagogues.

“Because of this collaboration we are able to serve a greater population,” says Youth Director Sheryl Glickman.  “We have expanded and are offering a program for children as young as second grade.  Prior to this we ran only three groups, all meeting on Sunday evenings.  Our second and third grade Nitzanim time frame can coincide with the dinner hour we’ll be offering the kids the option to purchase pizza during the meeting.  Kadima, for kids in grades 6, 7, and 8 will follow at 6:15-7:30 p.m. and USY (United Synagogue Youth) for kids in grades 9-12 will come in from 7:30-9 p.m.  Two of our facilities are fortunate to have gyms in their buildings so as another option members can attend Gym Night on Thursdays from 5:45-7 p.m.”

All three synagogues are Conservative and are affiliated with United Synagogue for Conservative Judaism.  The opportunity to meet Jewish youth not only from Queens but from all over the country opens up a network for the children.  For more information please call Sheryl Glickman at Hollis Hills Jewish Center at (718) 776-3500.”
