Frequently asked questions

What is a Kinnus?

A kinnus is a weekend overnight getaway at a host synagogue where Jewish teens will get to spend Shabbat together, participate in fun activities, and form friendships unlike any other. This is a USY tradition that is embraced by teens all over the country and considered to be one of the most meaningful parts of teens' time in USY!

What kind of activities happen at Fall Kinnus?

Fall Kinnus normally consists of many activities, including teen-planned programs, bonding activities, meaningful planned conversations, creative prayer services, a fundraiser for charities and social causes, and a dance on Saturday night.

Is this year's Fall Kinnus just METNY, like past years?

While our Fall Kinnus has typically been just for teens in METNY, this year we are super excited to partner with USY's New Jersey region, Hagalil, to create our first-ever joint program!

Will there be Covid protocols?

We will be strictly enforcing Covid protocols in an effort to keep all teens safe. CLICK HERE for a list of these protocols.

What are the sleeping arrangements? Where will we be staying?

Teens will be staying at the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick, which is right next to the host synagogue, Highland Park Conservative Synagogue. Teens will sleep in hotel rooms, with 4 teens in each room.

Are masks required in hotel rooms?

No, if the door is closed.

What is this year's Kinnus' theme?

The theme for this year is... THE 60S!!!! Make sure to bring your best hippie outfit for the Saturday night dance!

What does Shabbat look like at Fall Kinnus?

At USY, we view Shabbat as a time to refrain from the norms and stresses of the week, including electronics and social media. Teens will not be allowed to use their phones on Shabbat, and by doing this, they will instead be present with each other and the community.

Will there be busing?

Yes. More info will be provided as soon as possible, and will be updated here.

What is the price?

The price for Fall Kinnus is $206.75, not including busing.

What should I bring?

Teens should arrive in Shabbat clothes, and will wear Shabbat clothes all of Friday until they arrive at the hotel, and all of Saturday until Shabbat ends. Teens can wear regular clothes on Sunday, so please pack accordingly. Make sure to also pack pajamas, your best Hippie-themed clothes to change into for the Saturday night dance, and talit and tefilin if you participate in these rituals.

Do I need to bring money?

Money is not required, but is recommended for teens who would like to buy regalia (merchandise) and/or participate in the Social Action/Tikkun Olam (SATO) fundraiser.
